Will a black swallowtail hibernate even if it is kept in the warm indoors?
We have one in a jar, which appears to be beginning to pupate. We are wondering if we need to keep it outside, so it can respond naturally to the outside temps, or can we keep it indoors.
Also, when do black swallowtails hibernate? We live just north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and today’s date is October 1. Is it likely that this caterpillar will hibernate, or is there time for another life cycle before winter?
Thank you,
Arlis

My guess is that this chrysalis is one that will overwinter, so I would put it in your garage or someplace cold. I think that it would be too cold by the time the butterfly would emerge if you kept it inside.
